Truck carrying 40,000 pounds of beer catches fire on I-95 in Stafford causing major backups

The northbound lanes were closed for about five hours.

STAFFORD, Va. — Thousands of pounds of beer did not see a hoppy ending Wednesday after a truck carrying it caught ablaze on Interstate 95.

Virginia Department of Transportation in Fredericksburg posted on X just after 4:10 p.m. that I-95 Northbound was closed at mile marker 139, before exit 140 and Courthouse Road in Stafford after a vehicle fire. The closure caused backups up to four miles.

Just before 4:30 p.m., during rush hour, two lanes remained closed. The cause for the miles of backups -- a truck hauling 40,000 pounds of beer went up in flames.

The lanes reopened around 8:30 p.m., but not information has been released about what might have started the blaze.
