COLUMBIA, Md. (WUSA9) -- A man digging a trench for a waterline in Columbia, Maryland was trapped when the trench collapsed and buried the victim to chest level, officials said.
According to Howard County Fire and Rescue, the man was digging a waterline on Barchink Place prior to the collapse. The man's condition was described as "stable and alert."
A special operations team was called in and began making preparations to shore up the trench to prevent a second collapse before freeing the victim.
The man has been transported to a local hospital for evaluation.
The incident happened around 7:30 p.m.
