ARLINGTON, Va. — Even with a deluge in the District, sentinels at Arlington National Cemetery continued an uninterrupted watch over the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Tomb guards from the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) are assigned to protect the sacred site, performing a watch that has gone uninterrupted for four generations.
The changing of the guard takes place every half hour during the summer months, a ritual that continued through sheets of rain falling on the sacred site this week.
Sentinels are trained to endure all severe weather conditions - with members of the Old Guard watching over the area even after the cemetery closes overnight to the public.
