Crews will use explosives to remove Key Bridge debris from cargo ship

Experts say it will take surgical precision. Here's a closer look.

BALTIMORE — Crews at the site of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore are turning their focus on clearing wreckage out of the Patapsco River. Key Bridge Response Unified Command is scheduled to use precision cuts with small explosive charges to remove a large section of the bridge from on top of the cargo ship Dali.

Officials with Unified Command say the small charges will split the large section of truss at specific locations to create multiple, smaller sections. Once broken up, salvage crews can use cranes and barges to remove those sections of the bridge from the channel. The goal is to eventually refloat the Dali, as well.

“We remain focused on restoring the Marine Transportation System, while ensuring the protection of the public and the environment,” said Capt. David O’Connell, Key Bridge Response Federal On-Scene Coordinator. “By using precision cuts, we reduce risks to our personnel and can safely and efficiently continue clearing the channel for the Port of Baltimore.”

The exact timing of when the cuts will be made has not been finalized. Experts say it will take surgical precision.

Unified Command says those around the bridge will see small puffs of smoke and bangs similar to fireworks. Unified Command and Maryland Department of Emergency Management will send text messages to nearby communities ahead of the controlled demolition.

Similar methods were used for the controlled demolition of the Harry W. Nice Memorial Bridge in March 2023.
