FAIRFAX, Va. — Southbound George Washington Memorial Parkway is in the process of reopening Friday morning after both directions were closed for a sinkhole, officials said.
Engineers with the Federal Highway Administration have determined the sinkhole does not pose immediate risk to southbound lanes.
National Park Police said the northbound closure between the beltway and Route 123/Chain Bridge Road will likely be extensive.
The sinkhole is below the parkway and appears to be caused by a broken storm water pipe deep in the ground.
Officials said this is unrelated to road surface or condition of the parkway.
