WASHINGTON — Modern art can be daunting.
The prospect of bringing your family with kids to a cathedral of contemporary art can be, challenging.
But as spring arrives and attendance soars at the Smithsonian museums, there’s an android who sparks joy, and dare we say, humanizes, a highbrow day at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.
Pepper the Robot, has arrived.
After its pilot program began last April, the android has proven it has staying power.
The four-foot tall robot greets visitors within the Hirshhorn, as well as at the National Museum of African American History and Culture, Smithsonian Castle, and Environmental Research Center.
Pepper’s mission – is simply to spice things up. This is the droid you’ve been looking for. The gleaming robot puts visitors in a good mood, conveys information about the collections, and, dances.
Yes. Pepper freestyles.
“If your first experience in the building is with a joyful, fun, four-foot robot that's dancing, hopefully that experience will carry on through the rest of your visit,” said Ashley Meadows, gallery guide manager at the Hirshhorn.
“Pepper’s main job is to attract human attention, and, it is very magnetic.”
