BETHESDA, Md. (WUSA9) -- Metro tweets posted early Thursday morning warnriders of further delays on the Red Line due to a track problem that has plagued the system since Tuesday.

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority says workers are trying to restore normal service on the Red Line as they continue to clean up the mess left by ruptured "foam filled tire" on a piece of work equipment used during overnight construction. Officials say the foam created a slick surface on the rails Wednesday that caused trains to lose traction on the outbound track.

Reports from Metro tweeted around 5:20 a.m. indicated Red Line trains will continue to single track Thursday morning between Twinbrook and Grosvenor until further notice.

Metro says clean-up work continued through the night and as of 5:25 a.m., a test train was being prepared to determine whether the track can be put back in service.

Shortly before 6:30 a.m., Metro issued an update saying that a test train crew reported a good track inspection. Metro is now in the process of restoring 2-track service.
