WASHINGTON D.C., DC — The Smithsonian is gearing up to celebrate 50 years since the Apollo 11 mission. The festivities begin Tuesday with many outdoor activities.
However, this is all happening during a week with record heat and storms in the forecast.
There are no plans to cancel events due to the extremely dangerous heat, said Smithsonian spokesperson, Alison Mitchell.
Mitchell said additional medical stations are being placed along the Mall, along with cooling tents.
The mall will be cleared if storms turn severe.
For two nights, starting Tuesday, the Smithsonian will project a full-sized Saturn V rocket onto the monument, from 9:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.
There’s also a free performance called, “Apollo 50: Go for the Moon,” scheduled for Friday and Saturday nights near the Smithsonian castle. It will feature a large Kennedy Space Center countdown clock and a video detailing the mission to put man on the moon.
If the heat is unbearable, several indoor events are scheduled throughout the week as well.
