ST. PAUL, Minn. - Minnesotans will be able to get driver's licenses and ID cards that comply with the federal Real ID law starting next year.

Now that Gov. Mark Dayton has signed a bill complying with the federal regulations, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Driver and Vehicle Services can begin working to meet the requirements. They will start issuing licenses by Oct. 1, 2018.

On Friday, the DPS sent out some tips to help Minnesotans understand what's next.

  • No action required yet
Since Real ID-compliant licenses and IDs won't be ready until next year, there is nothing for cardholders to do at this time.
  • Current license still OK - for now
Minnesotans can use their current driver's license to board domestic flights until Jan. 22, 2018. To visit federal facilities and military bases they will need an alternative form of ID in addition to a driver's license. Dayton did ask for an extension from the federal government that would allow current licenses to be used past January 2018 while the state catches up with requirements.
  • Getting your Real ID
When Real ID-compliant cards are available, Minnesotans can get them when they renew or apply for a new driver's license or ID. For those who want to get a Real ID before their license expires, a fee will be charged.
  • Enhanced driver's licenses
An enhanced driver's license is a federally approved ID for crossing U.S. borders. Minnesota residents can already apply for one for $15 on top of the standard driver's license fee.
