PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, Md. — Prince George's County State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy officially announced her candidacy for Prince George’s County executive.
Braveboy announced her candidacy Wednesday and joins Prince George’s County Councilmembers Jolene Ivey and Calvin Hawkins. Ivey is the chair of the council, and Hawkins is councilmember at large.
Both Ivey and Hawkins announced their candidacies on Dec. 2, the same day Angela Alsobrooks stepped down from the job so she can join the U.S. Senate after winning the seat in November.
"Prince George’s County is at a crossroads. The next County Executive must tackle the housing affordability crisis, improve our schools, support our businesses, and work with the community and police to reduce crime," Ivey said in a press release.
"Sen.-elect Alsobrooks leaves a legacy of leadership that has positioned Prince George’s for continued prosperity. To build on this progress, we need new leadership with deep experience in government and a proven record of centering the voices of communities. That is why I have decided to run for Prince George’s County Executive. I am confident that my 30 years of experience in county government has prepared me for this awesome responsibility," Hawkins said in a press statement.
Braveboy had posted on social media indicating her run since Alsobrooks stepped down, first changing her name to Aisha Braveboy 4 Exec on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, on Dec. 2. On Monday, Braveboy posted on Facebook about Wednesday’s official announcement.
“I’m passionate about building a future where our communities are safer, families are stronger, and every resident has the opportunity to thrive. This is more than just a campaign—it’s about putting YOU at the center of our county’s progress,” Braveboy wrote in the post.
If Braveboy, Ivey or Hawkins wins the special election, another special election will be triggered to fill their respective seat.
