How you can help families separated at the border

FALLS CHURCH, VA -- If seeing what's happening on the border has you wanting to take action, you're not alone.

"There are many complicated issues in immigration but not this," said Amanda Doyle of the nonprofit Together Rising.

"It's a huge need," said Doyle.

Immigration experts say the most dire need is for legal help. There is no right to legal counsel in immigration court. The American Immigration Council estimates that 86 percent of detainees go through legal proceedings without at attorney.

"This is a chronic problem for detained immigrants that is not going to go away," said Karen Lucas of the American Immigration Council’s Immigration Justice Campaign.

Both groups say anyone can get involved, stressing that donations are the easiest way.
Together Rising's average donation is $25, but it adds up says Doyle.

"We can do a lot of good together," said Doyle.

The Women's Refugee Commission, a nonprofit that helps women and children in crisis, suggests calling local churches to ask what they need. It says you can also consider becoming a detention visitation volunteer by following this link: www.freedomforimmigrants.org/join-us-1/.

It adds that attorneys, interpreters, and those who are fluently bilingual can call legal service providers to volunteer. Click here for a list.
