WASHINGTON — In an event that blended political rivalry with mixology mastery, U.S. Senator Ben Cardin of Maryland faced off against Delaware Senator Chris Coons to determine the ultimate Orange Crush maker. This spirited contest took place on Tuesday in the Senate Dirksen Office Building in D.C.
The competition was set after Delaware's recent legislative move to declare the Orange Crush its official cocktail — a bold claim considering Maryland's longstanding association with the refreshing drink. Senator Cardin, hailing from the home of the original Orange Crush, was ready to defend his state's honor against Senator Coons, who mixed his state's version of the beloved cocktail.
The showdown featured each senator crafting their own rendition of the Orange Crush, showcasing the unique twists and ingredients that their respective states bring to the table. The drinks were evaluated by a panel of judges, including Emily Heil, Food Reporter for The Washington Post, Jessica Sidman, Food Editor for Washingtonian, and Senator Chris Van Hollen. Special guest Chris Wall, owner of Harborside Bar in Ocean City, Maryland, also joined the festivities.
As the clock struck 5 p.m., the Senate Dirksen Office Building transformed into a battleground of citrus and spirits, where only one senator's concoction reigned supreme. Maryland's original recipe held its ground, winning the title against Delaware's new official cocktail. The Cardin-Coons crush contest proved to be a zestful mix-off, celebrated by all attendees.
