MARYLAND, USA — It was a busy first weekend of the early voting period for both candidates for U.S. Senate in Maryland. Both Prince George's county executive Angela Alsobrooks and former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan hit the campaign trail Saturday, making several stops throughout the state.
Among the stops on Alsobrooks' schedule - an early voting center at the Jane E. Lawton Community Center in Chevy Chase, where volunteers told WUSA that voters had been showing up non-stop since the center opened at 7 a.m.
Alsobrooks stopped to talk to several families and voters about the issues that matter to them.
"Reproductive freedom is an issue that I’ve heard about quite frequently here," the county executive explained. "Economic opportunity – people are very concerned about gun violence."
Alsobrooks encouraged all Marylanders to get out and vote.
"I hope people are excited to vote because we are literally voting for the future that we desire in our state and in our country," she said.
35 miles north in Mount Airy, Alsobrooks' opponent, former Maryland Gov Larry Hogan, touted his record in Annapolis.
"I think most people thought I did a pretty good job as governor, and I think I’m going to be the same kind of leader in Washington," he explained, "where I think they desperately need people who are willing to work together."
Like Alsobrooks, Hogan advised people to go to the polls to make sure their voices are heard.
"I think there are a lot of people that are concerned about the direction of our country, and they’re going to come out and express their vote," he said, "and I think that’s really great."
