WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump has endorsed a candidate in Maryland's U.S. Senate race, surprisingly someone who has been one of his fiercest critics.
Despite former Gov. Larry Hogan's repeated statements saying he does not and will not support Donald Trump, the former president has endorsed Hogan as he goes up against Democrat Angela Alsobrooks.
A Hogan campaign spokesperson confirmed the presidential endorsement to WUSA9 Thursday afternoon. Additionally, the spokesperson repeated Hogan's stance on the former president in a statement:
"Governor Hogan has been clear, he is not supporting Donald Trump, just as he didn't in 2016 and 2020."
Trump was convicted of 34 felony charges last month. Before the verdict was read, Hogan took to X, formerly known as Twitter, urging Americans to respect the verdict and legal process.
"At this dangerously divided moment in our history, all leaders—regardless of party—must not pour fuel on the fire with more toxic partisanship," Hogan wrote. "We must reaffirm what has made this nation great: the rule of law."
The statement angered some Republicans, including Chris LaCivita, a senior campaign advisor to Trump, who responded by telling Hogan, "You just ended your campaign."
Alsobrooks issued a statement a few hours after the endorsement saying, “The stakes of this race could not get any higher. Just last week, Senate Republicans shot down access to contraception. Hours ago, Senate Republicans voted against protecting IVF. And just now, Donald Trump endorsed Larry Hogan so he can have a Republican majority.”
Hogan held the position of Maryland governor for two terms. Now he is campaigning against Alsobrooks for retiring third-term Senator Ben Cardin's (D) seat in the US Senate.
