WASHINGTON — In a politically charged climate where the stakes are exceptionally high, Angela Alsobrooks, the Prince George's County executive and Democratic candidate for Maryland's Senate seat, has voiced her unwavering support for Kamala Harris' presidential campaign.
Alsobrooks's endorsement of Harris is rooted in shared values, a long-standing friendship and a vision for a united Democratic front.
In an interview with WUSA9, Alsobrooks talked to us about why she stands behind Harris and her plan to keep Maryland blue.
On Monday, Alsobrooks was a part of a historic Zoom call led by 44,000 Black women where over $1 million was raised in support of Harris running for president. When asked what it was like to see so many women come together in that moment, Alsobrooks said, "It's a wonderful day for women everywhere, celebrating the fact that we can have, for the second time in our country's history, a woman as a nominee for president of our country."
Alsobrooks firmly believes that the enthusiasm for Harris’ campaign is not just about her candidacy but about rallying behind a shared Democratic vision. She acknowledged the deep respect and appreciation Democrats have for President Joe Biden and his endorsement of Harris.
“We are now all 1,000% behind her,” Alsobrooks said.
Alsobrooks believes that this united approach is essential for the Democratic ticket’s success and for achieving progressive objectives.
Alsobrooks’ endorsement of Harris is also a reflection of their shared values. Both women, with their backgrounds in law and public service, have championed causes such as responsible gun legislation and economic opportunity. They have a long-standing friendship and have even campaigned together in the past.
"I do know her. I've known her now for over a decade. I know that she's smart and she's principled and she's hard working, and she would be a fabulous President of the United States," said Alsobrooks.
Alsobrooks praised Harris’s intelligence, principles, and dedication, highlighting their common belief in safeguarding families and fostering safety.
“I am very proud of her,” Alsobrooks affirmed.
In addition, Alsobrooks said she sees Harris’ candidacy as pivotal in ensuring a Democratic majority in the Senate, which she said is crucial for advancing the party’s agenda on issues like reproductive rights, gun safety and judicial appointments. Alsobrooks is actively working to keep Maryland blue, in her race against former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, and secure the 51st vote for the Democrats, reinforcing her belief that Harris' presidency would align with the values and priorities of most Marylanders.
