LEONARDTOWN, Md. — A St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s deputy was arrested on assault charges Saturday after an altercation with his girlfriend, the sheriff's office said.
Around 3:40 p.m., Deputy Donald Anthony Shubrooks contacted the department's non-emergency line and told the dispatcher he'd been involved in a domestic dispute with his girlfriend at his home.
Deputies responded to Shubrooks’ home in Lexington Park. Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division also responded to begin an investigation.
According to the Sheriff's office, Shubrooks and the victim had an argument, which escalated into a physical fight.
The victim left the residence after the altercation but returned when deputies arrived. She had minor injuries.
Shubrooks, 29, was arrested on assault charges. He was taken to the Detention and Rehabilitation Center where he's awaiting a bond hearing.
Sheriff Steve Hall said the Office of Professional Responsibilities has initiated its own administrative investigation to identify violations of agency policies or procedures, as is department policy.
Shubrooks has been assigned to the Patrol Division since August 2020. He's currently on emergency suspension with pay pending the outcome of the investigations.
