FREDERICK, Md. — A wanted man is in the hospital after a standoff and shooting at a Frederick, Maryland motel room.
According to an interim spokesperson with the Frederick County Sheriff's Office, authorities were called to the Super 8 Motel at 20 Monocacy Boulevard because they were looking for a 45-year-old wanted on a felony warrant out of Pennsylvania for child sexual assault and abuse. Deputies found a vehicle associated with the man, and confirmed he was registered at the motel.
Police spoke to the man through his room door. The man made it clear he was not coming out, and he had a gun. A standoff ensued until about 1 a.m.
That's when police say the situation escalated and shots were fired. The wanted man was shot and wounded by a Frederick County Sheriff's deputy and Frederick City Police Officer. The officers were later identified as Cpl. Alex Mendez and Officer Connor Walsleben. Both officers have eight years of law enforcement experience. They have been placed on administrative leave pending the conclusion of an investigation.
The wanted man was taken by helicopter to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Unit in Baltimore where he is in critical but stable condition. The man has not been identified by police.
No law enforcement or other guests at the motel were injured.
