WASHINGTON — DC Fire Emergency Medical Services escorted the MPD police officer who died after being accidentally shot retrieving a gun from a storm drain to his funeral home in a dignified transfer procession Friday morning.
Investigator Wayne David joined the police department in 1998. He was assigned to the Gun Recovery Unit for more than a decade. In 2021, he became an investigator with the Violent Crime Suppression Division.
David specialized in removing illegal guns off the streets and finding stolen cars. David was killed Aug. 28 when a gun he was retrieving went off.
He was brought to Pope Funeral Home in District Heights, Maryland on Friday.
“Today, we mourn the loss of Investigator David who died while serving in the line of duty. MPD supports his family and will carry on his legacy of service and kindness. He will never be forgotten,” D.C. Police Department posted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, Thursday afternoon.
Police have ruled the incident as a line of duty death. David leaves behind two children. He was also recognized with a Ribbon of Valor for his work during the Jan. 6 insurrection.
