UPPER MARLBORO, Md. — Police detained a suspect after a report of an active shooter at an elementary school in Upper Marlboro, Md. on Friday afternoon.
Police said Ricard Campbell, 35, of Upper Marlboro, entered Patuxent Elementary School after school had let out and made threatening statements. They said only six children were inside at the time as part of an after school care program.
All of the children were safely escorted out of the school.
Police said a staffer called 911 to report the incident, the school went into lock down, and Campbell left the school before police arrived.
Hank Stawinski, the Prince George's PD chief, said drugs appeared to be part of the incident, based on Campbell's behavior and the remarks he made.
They said the school went on lock down and teams from Prince George's PD searched and cleared the school.
In a Periscope video, Jen Donelan, the PGPD public information officer, said they had cleared the school and could find no evidence of shots fired.
Stawinski later said Campbell had an elongated fireplace/grill lighter with him, which a school employee may have mistaken for a weapon.
Campbell is now being charged with robbery and is in police custody, according to police.
Investigators believe Campbell stole a piece of jewelry from a staff member while he was inside the school.
Police asked people to avoid the area around the 4400 block of Bishop Mill Road for the afternoon and evening.
Stawinski said they tracked Campbell down using a bloodhound.
