Reporter Nikki Burdine is thrilled to be in Washington, D.C., waking you up on WUSA9's 9 and Shine morning show!
Nikki is an award-winning and Emmy-nominated reporter who has a passion for story-telling. She considers herself lucky that she gets paid to do what she loves. She has covered stories throughout Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington, D.C., West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, North Carolina and Georgia. Her reports have consisted of the devastating tornadoes across Kentucky, hurricanes in the Carolinas, high-profile murder trials, the Columbia Mall shooting and the White House fence jumpers. She also traveled with the University of Kentucky basketball team to their 2012 National Championship. Nikki was the red carpet correspondent at the Kentucky Derby for three years as well as the reporter on the exclusive Barnstable Brown Party. One of her reports landed her a guest appearance on an episode of "Disappeared" on Investigation Discovery. She was asked to contribute to the show after her reporting on the disappearance of Michelle McMullen in Maryland.
Nikki is originally from Kingsport, Tennessee and is a graduate of the University of Tennessee. Nikki was previously the weekend anchor and reporter for WLEX in Lexington, Kentucky. Before that, she was a reporter and anchor at WHAG in Hagerstown, Maryland. Nikki also worked for Redskins Radio/Red Zebra Broadcasting in Maryland.
When she is not working, Nikki enjoys volunteering with the Washington Humane Society and for the past six years has been a "model" in the annual Fashion for Paws fundraiser. She has raised more than $60,000 (and counting) for the homeless animals of the D.C. area. She also serves on the executive committee for the event. In 2012, she was the 'Washingtonian of the Year,' raising $47,000 for the Humane Society.
As a reporter, Nikki has moved around quite a bit. In each community she's lived in, she's made it her mission to give back. Nikki has volunteered with organizations such as the ALS Association, the Humane Society, the American Red Cross, as well as several other local organizations.
Nikki is passionate about traveling and has visited a dozen countries. She aspires to one day have her entire scratch-off map clear!
Outside of the news, Nikki is a sports fanatic, specifically college football and especially the Tennessee Volunteers. She's the daughter of a USMC colonel and a special education teacher and the oldest of three girls.
