WASHINGTON — In a game that will go down in both baseball and military history, Washington Nationals pitcher Trevor Williams stepped up to the plate — but not in the way you might expect. On Tuesday, Williams became the first-ever MLB player to perform an advancement ceremony for the United States Coast Guard.
Before the series opener against the San Francisco Giants Tuesday night, he had the unique honor of appointing Nicholas Hilarczyk as a Master Chief Maritime Enforcement Specialist in the U.S. Coast Guard.
This landmark event was possible because the U.S. Coast Guard, unlike other military branches, operates under the Department of Homeland Security, allowing civilians like Williams to participate in such ceremonies.
The advancement ceremony was a highlight of the Nationals’ Branch Appreciation Day, presented by RTX: U.S. Coast Guard at Nationals Park. Branch Days are a tradition for the Nationals, where they dedicate a special game to honor and celebrate each of the six military branches and the National Guard. This particular day was all about the Coast Guard.
The ceremony began with guardsmen from the USCG lining the field as the national anthem played. Our Nation’s Colors were proudly presented by the USCG Ceremonial Honor Guard, while the USCG Chorus delivered a rendition of the national anthem.
Adding to the day's excitement, Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard Heath B. Jones threw out the ceremonial first pitch, setting the tone for the evening. The sky was then graced by a flyover from two MH-65 Dolphin Helicopters.
Throughout the game, members of the Coast Guard were celebrated during the Salute to Service, receiving recognition for their dedication and service.
For Trevor Williams, this was more than just another game day. It was a chance to honor the Coast Guard and be part of a historic moment.
As the Nationals faced off against the Giants, the spirit of the Coast Guard’s motto, "Semper Paratus" (Always Ready), echoed throughout the stadium. The day's events reminded everyone in attendance of the dedication of the U.S. Coast Guard, and the unique ways in which our communities and service members can come together.
