CBS has a new live online news channel, CBSN, with anchors providing coverage and on-demand content available, too.
From 9 a.m. to midnight ET weekdays, anchors present stories live on the ad-supported network, with hourly updates. Viewers can use DVR-like functions to rewind and catch up on earlier parts of the broadcast, as well as go live.
CBSN is initially available on CBSNews.com on the Web and mobile, as well as Amazon Fire TV, Roku and the CBS News app for Windows 8/8.1 and Windows Phone 8/8.1 available through the Windows Store and Windows Phone Store. Apps for Android and iOS are expected by the end of the year.
The arrival of CBSN follows the network's launch last month of CBS All Access, a $5.99 monthly streaming service of CBS TV shows.
"CBSN is an important example of how CBS is able to leverage the unique strengths, talent and competitive advantages of its businesses to create exciting, highly competitive new services that meet evolving audience preferences for content consumption," said CBS Corp president and CEO Les Moonves in a statement. "There's a tremendous opportunity on these platforms for a true round-the-clock newscast. We're confident this service will appeal to both traditional news consumers and a whole new set of viewers."
Beyond CBS news, other sources of content will include CBS affiliate stations, CNET, CBSSports.com and Entertainment Tonight. Amazon and Microsoft are the initial CBSN sponsors.
CBS Corp. also plans to launch a standalone Showtime online subscription service next year for viewers who do not have pay TV service.
