Frederick County School Board member arrested on charges related to January 6

He was elected to the school board in November 2021.

WASHINGTON — An elected school board member in Frederick County, Va. was arrested Tuesday on charges stemming from his alleged involvement in the Jan. 6 Capitol riots.

Miles Adkins, who was elected to the Frederick County School Board in November 2021, according to a U.S. District Court document, traveled to D.C. from Stephens City, Virginia on Jan. 6, 2021. He sent messages to Facebook friends, which were obtained by the FBI, detailing plans to go as well as events from inside the building.

After attending former President Trump's rally at the Ellipse, Adkins walked to the U.S. Capitol and entered. He was seen via footage from the building, as well as through pictures and video sent through social media. According to court documents, he is recognized wearing a black cap with gold leaves on the bill and the word "CHUCK" on the front, sunglasses, a grey jacket, a scarf, dark pants, and a backpack with two small American flags on the sides.

When Adkins was interviewed by FBI, he confirmed to them that he went to D.C. on Jan. 6 to hear Trump's speech, and walked with a large group to the U.S. Capitol. The documents continued by stating that he informed them that there was no barrier when he arrived at the building, but he did see people scuffling with police and heard loud noises he believed were flashbang detonations inside.

Authorities say he wouldn't talk about his actions inside the building, but said he traveled to D.C. a few times prior to act as an escort for people associated with Oath Keepers and even talked with one on Jan. 6 through a phone app.

According to court documents, here's a timeline of events that Adkins has been captured doing on Jan. 6:

  • Around 2:15 p.m.: He entered the U.S. Capitol building through the Senate Wing door, just minutes after the first breach, he then proceeded towards the Senate side. He eventually helped a person enter the building through a broken window next to the door he previously entered.
  • Around 2:23 p.m.: He, along with the person he helped inside, walked toward the Crypt.
  • Around 2:29 p.m.: Adkins moved toward a first floor exit west of the Crypt, the Law Library door, but turned around and didn't exit. He could be seen holding a large canned drink, which corroborated his social media message that bragged about him drinking Coors Lite beer in the building.
  • Around 2:30 p.m.: Adkins went down a set of stairs in the building that led from the Crypt to the Visitor Center.
  • Around 2:31 p.m.: He circled around the Upper Orientation Lobby, and around 12 minutes later he was seen talking to people in the same area nearby where a confrontation with police was happening. And then, around 2:45 p.m., he walked back down toward the stairs.
  • Around 3:18 p.m.: Adkins walked around the Crypt, took photos with his phone, and danced around in the middle of a group. He is said to be then seen yelling and chanting. In addition, he placed objects on the base of one of the statues and left them there -- then walking away.
  • Around 3:33 p.m.: Adkins left the building through the Memorial Door. When leaving, he could be heard yelling, "Let's go get a beer, let's go get a beer!"

Adkins is facing charges of entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds, disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds, disorderly conduct in a capitol building, and parading, demonstrating, or picketing in a Capitol building, according to court documents.

Frederick County Public Schools released the following statement to WUSA in regards to Adkins:

"We are aware of the allegations involving Mr. Adkins. However, Frederick County Public Schools remains committed to our primary goal, which is to foster the growth and well-being of our students. We will continue to focus on moving forward with our goals and mission."
