WASHINGTON — The FBI says it has taken a former New Jersey National Guardsman into custody after he fled authorities while being served a warrant earlier this week related to his alleged participation in the Capitol riot.
The FBI’s Washington Field Office said Friday that 47-year-old Gregory Yetman had been taken into custody. The agency put out a bulletin for Yetman on Wednesday and on Thursday said it was offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.
Federal and local authorities mounted a two-day manhunt for Yetman after he fled his home in Helmetta, New Jersey. The manhunt was called off Friday morning after Yetman turned himself in.
According to the FBI, Yetman faces multiple felony charges for his alleged role in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, including assaulting police and civil disorder. A still image included in the FBI bulletin appears to show Yetman spraying a law enforcement-style canister of pepper spray while standing on a terrace at the Capitol.
According to CBS News, the New Jersey National Guard confirmed Yetman had served for approximately 12 years. He reportedly left the Guard in March 2022.
Because of the Veterans Day holiday, Yetman wasn’t expected to make an initial appearance in court until Monday. Charging documents for Yetman were not immediately available on the federal court system’s web portal.
In the 34 months since the Capitol riot more than 1,200 people have been charged. Of those, more than 400 have been charged with assaulting, resisting or impeding police, including nearly 120 who are accused of assaulting police with a dangerous or deadly weapon or causing serious bodily injury.
