WASHINGTON — Marvel has released the first trailer for Captain America: Brave New World, giving the public its first glimpse at a new Captain America.
The trailer starts with Anthony Mackie‘s Sam Wilson meeting with President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross (played by Harrison Ford), before stopping an attempted assassination of Ford's character.
The trailer's dialogue promises similarities to the second Captain America movie, "The Winter Soldier," which was widely praised upon its release because it turned a traditional superhero movie into an action-packed spy thriller.
The teaser ends with a quick, blink-and-you-miss-it glimpse of the Red Hulk, who is the alter-ego of Ross in the comics, throwing down the Captain America shield.
It's the fourth Captain America movie, and the first one to star Mackie instead of Chris Evans as the titular superhero.
At the end of "Avengers: Endgame," Evans' character, Steve Rogers, handed over the character's iconic shield and mantle to Wilson, who had been the Falcon for much of the MCU's run.
The first time fans got to see the new Captain America was in the Disney+ mini-series "Falcon and the Winter Soldier," which saw Wilson teaming up with Bucky Barnes (played by Sebastian Stan) to stop a violent populist group's attacks.
Other members of the cast include Danny Ramirez as the new Falcon, Carl Lumbly as Isaiah Bradley, Shira Haas as the Israeli superhero Sabra and Giancarlo Esposito as a mysterious villain.
Since Avengers: Endgame concluded a more-than-a-decade-long movie saga, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has struggled to keep fans engaged. The Disney-owned franchise began airing tie-in shows on the company's streaming platform, and reviews for many of the "Phase 4" movies have been less than stellar.
The new Captain America film will premiere in theaters on Feb. 12, 2025.
