WASHINGTON — The second night of the Democratic National Convention kicked off with two Democratic legacies rallying behind Vice President Kamala Harris.
The grandsons of former Presidents Jimmy Carter and John F. Kennedy cast Harris in the same image as their famous family members on Tuesday.
“Kamala Harris carries my grandfather’s legacy,” said Jason Carter, the grandson of the 39th president. “She knows what is right and she fights for it.”
He said the 99-year-old former president wished he could be in attendance at the Chicago convention.
"His body may be weak tonight, but his spirit is stronger than ever,” Carter said. “My grandfather can’t wait to vote for Kamala Harris.”
The former president will turn 100 on Oct. 1.
Jack Schlossberg, Kennedy’s grandson, said like when his grandfather was elected in 1960, “Once again, the torch has been passed to a new generation."
“She believes in America like my grandfather did," Schlossberg said. "That we do things not because they’re easy, but because they’re hard.”
Schlossberg has previously spoken out against his uncle Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s independent presidential bid.
The rest of Tuesday's speaking program, which is scheduled to last until 11 p.m. Eastern, will include a mix of Democratic Party stars and even some Republicans.
Former President Barack Obama, former first lady Michelle Obama and second gentleman Doug Emhoff are headlining Tuesday's event, a day after the unofficial farewell for President Joe Biden, who served eight years as Obama’s vice president.
Biden won’t be in the hall to see his former running mate speak, as he departed Chicago Monday after delivering his own speech.
The theme for the night is "A Bold Vision for America's Future."
