BUFFALO — As the clock ticks toward the first pick in Friday night's NHL draft (7 p.m., ET, NBC Sports Network), here are topics creating buzz:
*** Defenseman Cam Fowler: Multiple teams are in trade discussions with the Anaheim Ducks for Fowler, who is viewed as a No. 2 or No. 3 defenseman, depending upon the team's defensive corps. The Buffalo Sabres, Montreal Canadiens, Detroit Red Wings, Edmonton Oilers are presumed to be among interested teams. The Ducks want at least a first-round pick and another player or quality prospect. Because Edmonton has the No. 4 pick, that deal for Fowler would be more complex.
*** Defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk: How long have we heard Shattenkirk rumors? His name has been in the rumor mill for more than a year, and a deal could happen this weekend.
*** Wild buy out Thomas Vanek: The Wild are buying the underperforming forward to create an additional $5 million in cap space for next season.
*** Tim Murray's night: Most in league, and perhaps everyone in the city of Buffalo, believes the aggressive Buffalo general manager will swing a major deal for a defenseman to put his team in the spotlight on draft night. A roar will be heard if Commissioner Gary Bettman opens with, "I have a trade to announce."
*** Columbus Blue Jackets listening: The Blue Jackets are open to the possibility of trading the No. 3 pick, especially if it involves helping them land a proven center.
*** Andrew Shaw talk: Chicago media is reporting that the Blackhawks might deal the feisty Shaw if there is no progress is made in their contract talks.
