WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- A day after the death of poet, writer, and activist Maya Angelou, The Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery installed a painting of her for all visitors to see on Thursday.

The public will be able to see the painting by Ross Rossin in the first-floor gallery through June 12.

The portrait was unveiled at the museum in a ceremony that Angelou attended in April. At that time she spoke about her life and finding the patience and "…courage to look into one another's face no matter what color, no matter what community to see one's own self."

Dr. Maya Angelou passed away on Wednesday at the age of 86.
