ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The Maryland General Assembly approves the state's $46.6 billion budget for the next fiscal year including billions of dollars in education funding over the next decade.
Early this month, thousands of teachers, parents and students rallied in Annapolis to get lawmakers' attention. They demanded an increase in school funding and support for public schools.
A state commission known as the Kirwan Commission made recommendations to improve education. Some of the goals include an increase in teacher salaries, a boost in special education funding, expanding pre-kindergarten and more.
The spending plan includes $255 million in extra education funding to start implementing a state commission’s recommendations to improve schools, according to the Associated Press.
The Senate voted 47-0 and the House voted 122-13 for the legislation, according to the Associated Press.
The budget includes $500 million for school construction and $75 million to boost teachers' salaries.
