WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Funeral plans for Marion Barry have been announced. The former D.C. mayor and council member died on Sunday.
Wednesday, officials announced that his body would lie in repose at the John A Wilson Building at 1350 Pennsylvania Avenue NW for 24 hours on Dec. 4 starting at 9 a.m.
Barry's body will be taken a church in Southeast on Dec. 5. A musical and video tribute to Barry will be shown from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Temple of Praise at 700 Southern Avenue. A memorial service will take place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
On Dec. 6, thousands are expected to attend a celebration of Barry's life at the Washington Convention Center from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be a viewing from 8 a.m, to 11 a.m. and then a service from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. before a private burial.
Mayor Vincent Gray released a written statement along with the verbal announcement: "From his days as a leader on the front lines of the civil rights movement to his work to fight poverty and advance Home Rule for the District, Marion Barry leaves behind an incredible legacy. It is fitting that we come together as a city to celebrate this legacy and allow the entire District to say goodbye to the 'Mayor for Life.'"
