WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- A child sex offender who spent nearly three years on the run was arrested Tuesday in North Carolina, according to officials with the U.S. Marshals Service.
According to officials, Wallace Utley was convicted in 2009 for sexually assaulted a 10-year-old boy in D.C. The same year he was also convicted of brandishing a knife and threatening to kill someone in an unrelated case.
Utley failed to appear in court and also failed to register as a sex offender in the District in 2011 and 2012. Warrants were obtained for his arrest.
In January, U.S. marshals received information that Utley had fled to North Carolina. They worked with law enforcement there, following up on leads.
Officials say they found that Utley had left D.C. was living in a home where a daycare was being operated in Sanford, NC. A 5-month-old child and children ages 5 through 14 lived at the home, say officials. None of the residents knew about Utley's status as a child sex offender.
According to officials, Utley's criminal history also includes arrests for possession of narcotics, theft, burglary, robbery, assault with a dangerous weapon (knife) and threats.
