TOWSON, Md. — A man was caught trying to smuggle drugs to his cousin at a prison in Jessup, Md.

On Saturday, correctional officers acted on a tip from the department's Intelligence and Investigative Division. K-9 Unit members set up a checkpoint, and intercepted Daniel Johnson, 20, while he was trying to visit the Dorsey Run Correctional Facility around 12:30 p.m.

Officers recovered 55 strips of the narcotic 'suboxone.' Johnson said he intended to bring the drugs into the prison for his inmate cousin, a police report said.

Johnson was taken to the Maryland State Police barracks in Glen Burnie before appearing in Anne Arundel County District Court. The police report said he was released on his own recognizance.

Johnson was charged with drug possession, possession with intent to distribute, possession in a place of confinement and possessing contraband in a place of confinement, according to the report.

This was the second instance in a two-day span where someone tried to smuggle suboxone into a correctional facility.

On Friday, officers at the Roxbury Correctional Institution in Hagerstown, Maryland recovered 125 suboxone strips given to an inmate by a Baltimore attorney. The attorney was arrested and charged, the police report said.

"I applaud the diligence of our staff, interdiction teams, facility command staff and all who are working in the on-going struggle to keep our systems around the state safe and free from the external influences of contraband," Secretary Robert Green said.
