Several local agencies and companies have sent out warnings to drivers to look out for deer in our area this time of year.

AAA Mid-Atlantic issued a statement last month saying that more deer-related crashes in Virginia occur in the fall than any other season because it is deer mating season. In fact, according to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, more than half of all deer-related vehicle crashes happen between the months of October and December. Last year, the most deer-related accidents happened in November.

AAA officials advise drivers to wear seat belts and look out for deer. Be sure to slow down and brake instead of swerving. Also, if you see a deer standing near a road, it may run across the street so you should slow down and use your horn to scare the deer away if necessary. NEVER shine or flash your car's lights because it could cause the deer to fixate on your vehicle, say AAA officials.
