Washington Monument opens after 4th shutdown

The Washington Monument in Washington, D.C. on May 28, 2015

The National Park Service has re-opened the Washington Monument after a fourth shutdown in as many months. Last weekend, back-to-back blown circuit breakers cut power to the monument.

Its elevators stopped Saturday night. Seventy-three visitors were forced to walk 50 flights of stairs to the bottom. The park service says this is different than elevator closures in April, May, and July but but still an embarrassment to rangers.

"They'd much rather be talking about George Washington and his memorial rather than explaining to people why they can't go up," said park ranger Mike Litterest.

The park service thinks it was getting less electricity than usual probably due to the extreme heat. Even still, it still expects tickets for tomorrow to sell out.
