Woodbridge man pleads guilty to fake check scheme

The conspiracy to commit bank fraud allegedly included stealing mail and altering checks.

WASHINGTON — Jason Banks, 27, of Woodbridge, pleaded guilty Thursday to conspiracy to commit bank fraud for his involvement in a scheme to cash or deposit fraudulent checks.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia, between August 2021 and July 2022, Banks and other currently unknown conspirators caused a loss of more than $500,000. They allegedly created fake checks by either stealing and altering checks or creating fake checks using personal information Banks convinced accountholders to give to him.

Reportedly, at least one conspirator had obtained a universal mailbox key used by the U.S. Postal Service to steal mail, including checks.

Banks will be sentenced on August 28 and faces a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison.
