WOODBRIDGE, Va. — Prince William County Police and fire crews were called to Woodbridge High School for reports of a shooting Tuesday afternoon, according to Prince William County Fire Chief Matt Smolsky. The call prompted a lockdown at the school for approximately an hour.
Smolsky told WUSA9 that a call came into police around noon reporting an alleged shooting at the school. A school resource officer was the first to respond, a spokesperson for Prince William County Police said, followed by more officers and rescue personnel. The school building was secured as a precaution while the investigation continued.
As of 1 p.m., the department said it found no evidence of a shooting, determined there was no active threat to students or staff, or the surrounding neighborhoods, and lifted the lockdown, allowing the school to resume operations.
"The incident appears to be a false call," PWCPD tweeted at 12:44 p.m. "Officers will remain on scene at the school through dismissal."
Police said they will continue to investigate what led to the initial call and reports of a shooting. Anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact Prince William County police at 703-792-6500.
