Woman, 5-year-old girl killed in car crash on Dumfries Road, Neighbors call for changes

Police say no charges have been filed at this time.

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. — Police are investigating after a woman and child were killed in a car crash in Montclair Wednesday evening.

According to the Prince William County Police Department, officers were called to the area of Dumfries Road and Fortuna Center Plaza just after 6:30 p.m.

Investigators said the driver of a 2007 Chrysler 300 was driving north on Dumfries Road when they veered into oncoming traffic and hit a 2013 Chevrolet Suburban that was going in the opposite direction.

The crash caused the Chrysler 300 to run off the road and onto a sidewalk, while the Suburban came to a stop facing southbound traffic.

The 33-year-old man behind the wheel of the Chrysler 300 was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries. He is expected to survive.

A woman and a 5-year-old girl, who were both passengers in the Chrysler 300, were taken to an area hospital. Both later died from their injuries.

The woman who died has been identified as 33-year-old Dorothy Anne Fontain. Due to the child's age, her identity will not be released.

The 46-year-old woman who was driving the Suburban was treated for injuries at an area hospital and is expected to be okay.

Police say no charges have been filed at this time.

Police could not say if speed played a factor in the crash, but neighbors told WUSA9 speed is an issue and has been to blame for other crashes along Dumfries Road.

Jennifer and Jonathan Lear told us that drivers go so fast along Dumfries, they and their neighbors gave it a few other nicknames.

"Raceway 234, Daytona international speedway the Northern Daytona 500," they said.

The Lear's said they've seen their fair share of crashes along Dumfries Road, since they moved to the area 12 years ago.

"If you go up and down 234 you're going to see so many memorials and it's sad," said Jennifer.

Since 2021, there have been at least 11 crashes along Dumfries Road, between Fortuna Center Plaza and Country Club Drive, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The Lear's believe speeding is behind many of the crashes and said they want more enforcement in the area, to get people to slow down.

"It may not have been the speed in this situation, but it has been the speed in many situations and it will be the speed in future situations if this does not stop," said Jennifer.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to contact detectives at 703-792-7000.
