HENRICO, Va. — A Delaware man has been arrested after police say he trapped a state trooper in his passenger door and dragged him along Interstate 295 Friday.
At 4:08 p.m., on Dec. 2, a Virginia State Trooper saw a 2021 Mazda CX-30 SUV speeding south on I-295 in Henrico County.
The trooper initiated a traffic stop, and the SUV pulled off onto the shoulder at the 37-mile marker. Virginia State police say the driver was going 97 mph in the 70-posted zone.
According to police, the trooper approached the passenger side of the SUV and the driver was non-compliant with the trooper's requests. The driver of the SUV then sped off which caused the passenger side door to close on the trooper.
The trooper was caught in the door and dragged about 3 miles as the driver of the SUV drove up to 115 mph while continuing to head south on I-295. The vehicle hit two tractor-trailers and then crashed near the Creighton Road exit of I-295, according to police.
The driver, who was identified as 38-year-old Milton Jermaine Lewis of Delaware, fled by foot from the scene. Police said a search perimeter was immediately established and search efforts were underway with the help of Henrico County police and the Hanover County Sheriff's Office.
At around 6:18 p.m., Lewis was apprehended with the help of Henrico County police near Cold Harbor Road.
Lewis is facing charges including reckless driving by speeding, felony eluding of a police officer, having a concealed weapon, altering a serial number on a firearm, felony assault of a law enforcement officer, abduction, attempted capital murder, failure to maintain control of a vehicle, no seatbelt, felony hit and run.
The trooper and driver were both treated for minor and non-life-threatening injuries.
