ARLINGTON, Va. (WUSA9) -- Volunteers returned to Arlington National Cemetery on Saturday for the annual Wreaths Across America Clean-up day.

Tens of thousands of wreaths that were placed before Christmas had to be picked up.

It may have felt like the arctic tundra to some as they made their way into Arlington Cemetery.

But volunteers such as Kristen Carr came prepared and with a purpose.

"I think it's a very special time to pick up the wreaths so loved ones can lay flowers in honor of Valentine's Day."

Two sailors said it was an honor to be here.

"Just help our fallen shipmates and comrades," said Archibald Alamares, Petty Officer 1st Class. "This is one of those annual events that's near and dear to my heart."

"To pay our respects to people who have served our country, who have died for our country," said Nicholas Jarvis, Petty Officer 2nd class Pay. "It's a big honor to respect them."

Back in December, thousands came out to lay the wreaths at nearly every tombstone, retiring them now also serves as a sign of respect.

Volunteers cleared more than 240,000 wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery. This tradition has expanded to more than 1000 locations in 50 states.

"We think it's a great opportunity to remember the sacrifice of all these folks who gave their life to serve our country," said volunteer Laura Black. "The least we could do is come here on a cold day and pick up some wreaths."

Clean-up was scheduled at the end of January but Wreaths Across America to postpone the event because of the blizzard.
