Police shot and killed a family dog Sunday night in order to save its owner, officials said.

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- A foster parent in the Fredericksburg area has been charged with child abuse after an employee at the foster son's elementary school noticed burn injuries on the boy.

Eric Woods, 33, of Fredericksburg was taken into custody and charged with one count of child abuse causing injury.

A faculty member at an elementary school in Spotsylvania County noticed burn injuries on the boy back in August, Fredericksburg police said. The employee contacted law enforcement and child protective services.

Officials learned that the child was in foster care and living with a foster parent. Based off of the investigation, it was determined that the child had received intentional patterned burn injuries.

Woods turned himself in to police. He was later released on a personal recognizance bond. Police said Woods was a foster parent licensed through a private child placement agency.
