3 hospitalized after carbon monoxide emergency in Centreville

Officials say they recorded high levels of CO inside the home.

CENTREVILLE, Va. — Three people were taken to an area hospital due to a "carbon monoxide emergency" in Centreville, Virginia Thursday evening.

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue reported the incident at a home in the 14400 block of Black Horse Court.

Officials say they recorded high levels of CO inside the home.

There is no word on the identities of the people who were inside the home or how old they are. Their current conditions are unknown at this time.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends taking the following steps to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning:

  • Install a battery-operated carbon monoxide detector in the hallway near each bedroom
  • Check the battery twice a year and replace the detector every five years
  • Have your furnace, water heater and gas or coal-burning appliances serviced by a technician every year
  • Never use a generator inside your home, basement or garage or less than 20 feet from any opening into your house
  • Never run a car in a garage that is attached to a house, even with your garage door open
