ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The City of Alexandria will be renaming three streets this upcoming summer. A fourth street will be rededicated.
These streets are currently named after Confederate officers.
The four streets are the first to be impacted during what will be a 15-year process of renaming and rededicating roadways with ties to the Confederacy.
Here are the current names of the streets:
- North Breckinridge Place To Be Renamed Harriet Jacobs Place (In honor of Harriet Jacobs)
- North Early Street and South Early Street To Be Renamed Earley Street (In honor of Charity Earley)
- Forrest Street To Be Renamed Forest Street
- North Jordan Street, South Jordan Street, Jordan Court To Be Rededicated In honor of Thomasina Jordan
On Saturday, the Alexandria City Council voted unanimously to make these changes as the first steps in the City’s Confederate Street Renaming initiative. The initiative aims to foster a more inclusive community throughout the city.
The Historic Alexandria Research Committee (HARC) compiled a list of streets in Alexandria named after Confederate officers as well as a list of 63 new names for consideration by City Council and the City Council Naming Committee.
