A 19-year-old man is in police custody after Prince William County detectives say he beat his 51-year-old father to death early Monday morning. Police say the man also assaulted a K-9 officer.
Police were first called to the home in the 5600 block of Shannon Court in Woodbridge for a report of a domestic dispute. The 911 caller told police the man, later identified as Juan Pina-Ortiz, was destroying property inside the home and was possibly high on an unknown narcotic.
Police say when they got there, they found Pina-Ortiz, naked and assaulting a man, who was later identified as his father, 51-year-old Juan Pina-Recendiz. When police told the son to stop, he ignored them and retreated briefly into the home.
At one point, police say Pina-Ortiz came back out of the house and came toward officers, grabbing the vest of a K-9 officer. The officer's K-9 was deployed and bit Pina-Ortiz, who was eventually detained. The K-9 handler was not injured.
The father was pronounced dead at the scene from blunt force trauma. Investigators said the 19-year-old had also assaulted his 52-year-old mother.
Family of the victim have posted this GoFundMe page to raise money for his funeral expenses.
They wrote "he was the cornerstone of my family. He worked tirelessly to provide for us, sacrificing his own needs and desires to ensure we had a roof over our heads, food on the table, and opportunities for a better future".
Pina-Ortiz was arrested and charged with murder, domestic violence and battery and assault and battery on a law enforcement officer. He is being held without bond.
