Police: Pedestrian struck, killed by vehicle in Prince William County

Speed nor impairment seem to be factors in the collision, according to authorities.

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. — A 31-year-old pedestrian was killed Friday night after being hit by the driver of a car in Prince William County, leading to an investigation.

Officers with the Prince William Police Department responded to the area of Dumfries Road and Greentree Lane in Dumfries, around 9:45 p.m., to investigate a crash involving a pedestrian. 

Through an investigation, it was determined that the driver of a 2013 Hyundai Sonata was traveling north on I-95 and was exiting to eastbound Dumfries Road. While attempting to merge onto the road, the driver struck a pedestrian who was wearing dark clothing and walking in the roadway. 

The 27-year-old driver of the vehicle remained at the scene of the crash and the pedestrian, identified as Jamel Tanner, was taken to a local hospital. Police said he later died due to his injuries.  

Speed nor impairment seem to be factors in the collision, according to authorities.

The investigation into the pedestrian involved crash remains active and ongoing.
