HERNDON, Va. — Police in Fairfax County say they have arrested the 18-year-old they believe shot and killed a teenager in Herndon on Wednesday afternoon.
Fairfax County Police Department detectives with the Major Crimes Bureau were searching for Ismael Cruz-Delcid for killing one teenager and shooting at another. Police Chief Kevin Davis discussed the arrest during a press conference on Friday.
The deadly shooting happened in the 13000 block of Coppermine Road.
Investigators say Cruz-Delcid got into a physical fight with the two teens before breaking away and pulling out a gun. He then shot at both teens, hitting one but missing the other.
The teen who was wounded was taken to an area hospital and later died. Sources told WUSA9 that the teen killed was 14 years old.
The second teen was unharmed.
Police say Cruz-Delcid left his Honda Civic at the scene and ran away after the shooting.
Editor's Note: A previous version of this story mistakenly said Cruz-Delcid fled in his Honda.
Davis said Cruz-Delcid turned himself into police Thursday night. He did not give a statement to police upon turning himself in. Police are still working to determine the motive in this case and ask anyone who may have information about Cruz-Delcid or previous interactions with the 14-year-old victim to contact them.
"The life of a 14-year-old child was simply not lost the other day, it was taken by a gunman who intentionally shot and killed one of our children," Davis said. "That's something that has the attention of our entire community, and it should."
The 18-year-old was charged with second-degree murder and other charges related to the shooting. He is being held without bond, according to Davis.
"It's something that satisfies us, in the aftermath of such a tragedy, to be able to take him off the street and hold him accountable," Davis said.
Chief Davis said the early parts of the investigation show Cruz-Delcid and his victim had an ongoing personal clash. He added that the clash appears to be part of a larger conflict between neighborhood crews.
But he was quick to say he does not believe it is gang violence.
"There is no information at this time that there is a gang nexus," David said. "I anticipate that’s a question because it’s a conversation in the community.”
Police did not identify the victim during the press conference, due to his age. Fairfax County Schools Superintendent Michelle Reid said he was a student at Westfield High School.
"I want to assure our community that the safety of our students remains a top priority," Reid said.
The investigation remains active and ongoing.
