FAUQUIER COUNTY, Va. — Virginia State Police (VSP) are investigating after a small plane crashed in Fauquier County Thursday.
According to VSP, the single-engine aircraft took off from Culpeper but later went down in a field not far from a residential area near the 14500 block of Spring Mill Road just before 3:30 p.m.
Investigators say the aircraft attempted to make an emergency landing in the field when it collided with several trees.
Officers say the pilot, identified as a 79-year-old man, was the only person inside the aircraft when it crashed. They were taken to Fairfax Hospital with serious injuries and are expected to survive.
VSP is working to determine where the pilot was intending to fly to and how the crash happened.
