PALMYRA, Va. — A plane crash in Palmyra, Virginia Sunday morning left the pilot and passenger dead. Both people were from Northern Virginia.
The Fluvanna County Sheriff's Office received calls around 8:55 a.m. from residents living within the 200 block of Miles Jackson Road, off of Courthouse Road, in Palmyra about concerns of a low-flying plane and then what sounded like an explosion. Multiple agencies responded to search for the wreckage and the plane was found on fire in the woods off of Miles Jackson Road.
Fire crews responded as well to extinguish the blaze.
The privately owned plane was a twin-engine 1975 Rockwell Aero Commander 690A. It was piloted by John W. Latham, 63, of Haymarket, Virginia.
Latham and his passenger, 73-year-old Niiben C.A. Ayivorh, of Burke, Virginia, died in the crash. The Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond will perform autopsies.
The plane flew out of the Manassas Regional Airport Sunday morning and was flying to the Georgetown County Airport in South Carolina. There was a light rain at the time of the crash.
Both the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board were notified about the deadly crash.
