1 dead after car plunges into Potomac River

The passenger died at the hospital after being pulled from the fully submerged car.

VIRGINIA, USA — A person has died after a car was pulled from the Potomac River Thursday night, police said.

According to DC Fire and Rescue, the car ended up in the waterway near Humpback Bridge on GW Parkway. While it is unclear how the car ended up in the river, U.S. Park Police have called the incident a crash investigation.

According to Arlington Fire, two people were in the car when it went into the water just before 9:30 p.m. The driver was rescued and is expected to survive.

A passenger was pulled from the fully submerged car. They were taken to an area hospital unconscious and in critical condition and later died from their injuries.

The northbound lanes of the parkway were blocked for the investigation. All lanes have since reopened to traffic.

Crews from Arlington, DC Fire and EMS, Alexandria, the Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority and US Park Police are working the scene.
