DUMFRIES, Va. — Prince William County police say a 30-year-old woman has died after she opened the door of a moving car and fell onto the roadway in Dumfries.
The Crash Investigation Unit investigators responded to the area of Williamstown Drive and Richmond Highway to investigate the single-vehicle crash around 1:43 a.m.
Investigators said the driver of a 2015 Jeep Wrangler, Gustavo A. Barahona Benitez, 38, of Dumfries, Virginia, was heading northbound on Richmond Highway.
Barahona Benitez slowed down to make a right turn onto Williamstown Drive when the passenger opened the door and exited onto the roadway while the car was still moving, according to the Prince William County Police Department.
Authorities found Stefany De La Cruz Moreno Medina, of Woodbridge, Virginia, unconscious on the road. First aid was administered until fire and rescue personnel arrived on the scene, officials said.
She was taken to an area hospital, where she died as a result of her injuries that morning, police said.
The driver, Barahona Benitez, was located at the crash. He was charged with driving under the influence and having no operator's license.
Investigators believe Moreno Medina was under the influence of alcohol. It was not immediately clear why she opened the door and got out of the vehicle.
Investigators are asking anyone who may have witnessed his crash to contact the police. The investigation remains ongoing.
