Police say the crime scene was staged to look like a murder-suicide. Soon, police say they realized Helen’s sister Megan killed them both. Detectives discovered that Megan Hargan attempted fraudulent money transfers from her mother’s account on the day of the murder in the day before, said Major Ed Carroll, Fairfax County Police Major Crimes unit commanders.

The medical examiner determined both Helen and Pamela died of rifle wounds to the head. Pamela’s manner of death was homicide, but for Helen, it was undetermined, requiring complex police work.

After the murders, Megan and her six-year-old daughter moved to West Virginia to live with their husband and father, according to relatives.
